I'm still not sure what exactly I expected from this book, but either way, it was different than I thought.

I guess I expected that Lizzie would be the main character in this book, and instead, found that Ruth was, so it threw me off a bit. The story doesn't follow historical fact down to the letter, but I appreciated that the author knows how to tell a good story either way.

As a continuation from the first book, I was surprised that it was set in a different location and didn't really go as I would have thought after that book, but it was still interesting and very creative.

Overall, this was a good book, but I was a little dismayed that Lizzie wasn't as important as she could have been. She could have been a nameless main character that wasn't an important character in history and still served the same purpose.

This review is based on a complimentary copy from the publisher and provided through Netgalley. All opinions are my own.

Chapelwood The Borden Dispatches Cherie Priest 9780451466983 Books Reviews

I really enjoyed "Maplecroft," despite some flaws in plotting. Priest is an engaging writer and so I hoped to find more of the same with "Chapelwood." Unfortunately, while I still like the characters, the plotting issues are even greater here than in the first book. It's still engagingly written, but the gaps in logic make it difficult to really recommend it. Characters are motivated, not by things organic to the story, but because they just have a "feeling." There is nothing to understand their motivation to do anything or make any of the connections the story requires them to except their "feeling." This is not terribly good story-telling. My biggest problem, though, is the finale. I won't spoil anything, but the final act is ridiculously under-developed. I'm constantly told how scary and dangerous the situation is, but the events as depicted don't really seem that difficult to get through or endure. And what's worse, the ending does not feel earned at all. It could have been a beautiful ending, but it just sort of happens without a real, logical build-up.
Chapelwood is a fine followup to Maplecroft. Priest has more than done her homework regarding Lovecraft's world. The Call of Cthulhu and Lovecraft's other writings are meant to inspire terror and loathing at ancient beings of great and nigh omniscient power. Priest has set her novels in the same universe in a way that is inspiring to modern Lovecraft readers, as well as to those who may not be familiar with Lovecraft. Priest's work inspires the same terror and loathing, which is an excellent homage to Lovecraftian fiction. Nevertheless, Priest sets herself apart from Lovecraft with Chapelwood since Priest focuses on an alternate history version of Cthulhu events. Lizzie Borden couldn't have been portrayed more effectively or originally in this book and its predecessor.

To say the least, if you have any interest in Lovecraft, then read Priest's Maplecroft and then this magnificent follow-up titled Chapelwood. I am eagerly awaiting the next novel in this series.
NUMBER OF HEARTS 4
When I finished Maplecroft (bk #1 of Borden Dispatches) I sent a message right away to Ms. Priest to ask when the next book would be out. Needless to say I was so beyond excited when Ms. Priest told me that that Chapelwood was coming out. I was so engrossed in Lizzie’s world and the monsters that she fought, that I make Chapelwood an auto buy on audible (which is how I read/listened to Maplecroft too). I will say I was a little said that the narrators changed. But as I listened I knew that the same narrators couldn’t be used. Chapelwood takes place thirty years after the events of Maplecroft (so make sure you read Maplecroft first, because what happens in Maplecroft is very important).
Chapelwood is the same but very different then Maplecroft, which made this story so awesome. I love the twists and turns that happened in Chapelwood. I really enjoyed how Lizzie gets sucked into the events at Chapelwood. I really enjoyed the new characters that we meet in this book. Ruth is a feisty character and I would like to know more about her.
I don’t want to give anything away because that is how I am. So if you are a fan of Maplecroft (which I would HIGHLY recommend you reading) then you will love Chapelwood.
I am not sure what is next for this series, but I do hope with the way that Chapelwood was left that Ms. Priest plans to revisit this world. There are questions that need to be answered.

Disclaimer
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Netgalley & PENGUIN GROUP Berkley, NAL / Signet Romance, DAW in exchange for an honest review. This review is my own opinion and not a paid review.
When my copy arrived in the mail I gleefully picked it up and said aloud, "Alright, let's get it Lizzie!" After reading Maplecroft, I feel like Lizabeth Borden is one of my best friends. Which is understandably odd since she's best known historically as a patricidal axe-murderer. However, Priest has done such an incredible job of taking the historical Lizzie Borden and recreating her as a super-charged yet appropriately refined New Englander who battles various minions of The Great Old Ones with her trusty axe and a handful of eccentric yet believable characters. In Chapelwood, we see less of Lizzie than I'd like (which is understandable) and more of the mysterious Inspector Simon Wolf. Both characters are competently developed and the world they inhabit is deftly drawn. It is definitely a novel with a social-conscience yet it never strays into heavy handed 'this book has a message' territory. However, how many fantasy novels out there feature an axe-wielding sexagenarian lesbian? It's a great fun, a great read, with a great cast of characters (especially Lizzie) that I hope Priest presents to us again some time soon.
I'm still not sure what exactly I expected from this book, but either way, it was different than I thought.
